ROME – The excitement surrounding college basketball is palpable as the Villanova and Notre Dame men’s and women’s teams prepare to kick off their season in a historic doubleheader in Rome. This unique event, aptly named the Eternal City Tip-Off, pays tribute to Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, and is set to draw fans from both universities to the Italian capital.

On Saturday, the teams were honored with an audience at the Vatican, where Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Prevost in Chicago, greeted them warmly. In a light-hearted moment, he remarked on his neutrality in sports, though he jokingly hinted that his former self might have had a different opinion. This humorous exchange delighted the audience, which consisted of approximately 7,000 attendees from Villanova and Notre Dame, including players, coaches, fans, and their families.

The games are scheduled to take place at the Palazzo dello Sport, a venue with a seating capacity of 11,000 located about a half-hour drive from the Vatican. While Pope Leo XIV, who recently underwent lung cancer surgery, was not expected to attend the games, a contingent of cardinals and other officials from the Vatican are anticipated to be present at the arena, showcasing the significance of this event.

Both universities have made the journey to Rome not just for the competitive spirit but also to bring along their team chaplains, emphasizing the Catholic heritage and community ties that bind them. The men’s game is set to commence at 3:30 p.m. local time (9:30 a.m. ET), with coverage provided by Fox Sports featuring analyst Bill Raftery. Following this, the women’s game will showcase No. 13 ranked Notre Dame at 6 p.m. local time (noon ET) on FS1, adding to the day’s excitement.

This event not only marks the beginning of the college basketball season but also stands as a cultural and spiritual celebration, uniting fans, players, and the Catholic community in a shared love of sport. As the teams take to the court, they carry with them the blessings of the pope and the hopes of their supporters, making this doubleheader a memorable occasion in the annals of college basketball.
