August can sometimes feel like a dull month in Hollywood, but the excitement is about to kick off with the Venice Film Festival. This prestigious event, which marks the beginning of the fall film festival season, is set to start on Wednesday at the beautiful Lido beach in Venice, Italy.

A-list celebrities will be lighting up the red carpets, with stars like Noel and Liam Gallagher, Robert Pattinson, Rooney Mara, George Clooney, and Penélope Cruz expected to attend. Some of the films shown here could even become contenders for the Oscars!

However, this year feels a bit different. While Hollywood stars will still shine on the red carpet, the festival lineup includes intriguing performances, such as Pattinson portraying Chris Hansen from “To Catch a Predator,” Dakota Johnson as Marilyn Monroe, and Clooney receiving a lifetime achievement award. But much of the buzz may center around a figure who, ironically, might not even be in attendance: Elon Musk.

Documentaries Shine a Spotlight

One highly anticipated documentary is Alex Gibney’s nearly four-hour film about Elon Musk. This project has been in development for about four years, and Gibney, an Oscar-winning filmmaker, initially hesitated but was persuaded by a friend to explore the complexities of Musk’s influence on modern power dynamics.

Musk has dismissed the documentary as a “hit piece,” to which Gibney responded, “How would you know?” Gibney, who began as a fan of Musk and even owned a Tesla, aimed to have a conversation with him for the film. However, when Musk declined, Gibney dug deeper into the facts, ultimately presenting a perspective that challenges Musk’s image as a modern-day innovator.

“I think that the news in this film is that Musk isn’t an inventor. He’s a confidence man,” Gibney stated, highlighting the fear many have about speaking openly on the record regarding Musk.

Voices of Courage in Troubling Times

Another poignant documentary featured this year is Julia Loktev’s “My Undesirable Friends: Part II — Exile,” which continues to track the stories of independent Russian journalists who fled their country due to the war in Ukraine. These journalists faced the harrowing choice of stopping their reporting or risking their freedom.

The festival will also showcase “NAZA,” a documentary focusing on the ongoing conflict in Gaza, made by filmmakers who previously won an Oscar. While Venice has opted for a more subdued atmosphere without large protests this year, some groups are still urging the festival to reconsider its ties with entities linked to the Israeli government.

Hollywood and the Oscars

The Venice Film Festival is often a key player in the Oscar race, and many eyes will be on this year’s lineup for potential best picture nominees. Films like Martin McDonagh’s “Wild Horse Nine” and Florian Zeller’s “Bunker,” starring Cruz and Javier Bardem, are generating significant buzz. The festival also highlights international filmmakers such as Hirokazu Kore-eda and Lee Chang-dong, adding to the diverse mix of stories being told.

Despite the excitement, there’s a noticeable absence of women in the main competition, with only one female director represented. This is a continuation of past trends that have prompted the festival to make pledges for greater inclusion that have yet to be fully realized.

Closing Thoughts

As the Venice Film Festival approaches, it promises to offer a mix of glamour, important conversations, and critical reflections on power, media, and the human experience. For more coverage of the Venice Film Festival and its events, visit AP News.
