SAN ANTONIO – If you’re looking for something fun and culturally enriching to do in San Antonio, check out the “Jardin de las Catrinas” exhibit at the San Antonio Botanical Garden! This vibrant, Día de los Muertos-inspired display features stunning Catrina sculptures created by talented San Antonio artist Regina Moya.
The exhibit is presented by Bank of America and will be on display until November 2 at the garden, which is located at 555 Funston Place. It’s a perfect outing for families, friends, or anyone looking to appreciate art that celebrates Mexican heritage.
Regina Moya is not just any artist; she’s a Mexican writer, illustrator, and public artist known throughout the San Antonio community for her captivating Día de los Muertos artwork. Her Catrina sculptures are more than just decoration; they tell stories and reflect important cultural themes related to heritage and remembrance.
Some of her sculptures are massive, standing up to 16 feet tall! As you stroll through the garden, take a moment to read the messages that accompany each piece. One of the highlights features gold accents made from recycled plastic, carrying the thought-provoking message, “Not everything that shines is gold.” This clever phrase encourages viewers to think deeply about appearances and values.
The San Antonio Botanical Garden is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends, making it a flexible option for a visit. Admission prices vary throughout the week: Monday through Thursday, tickets are $18 for adults and $13 for children, while kids under 3 can enjoy the garden for free. If you have a student or military ID, you can get in for just $16. On weekends (Friday to Sunday), the prices increase slightly to $22 for adults and $15 for children, with the same free admission for the little ones.
Additionally, the garden offers special discounted admission days called “Neighbors in Nature.” During these events, Bexar County residents can enter for only $7! The next upcoming dates for this offer are Sunday, October 18, and Sunday, December 13.
So, whether you’re an art lover, a culture enthusiast, or just looking for a great way to spend your day, the “Jardin de las Catrinas” exhibit is not to be missed. Go out there and enjoy this unique blend of art and community at the San Antonio Botanical Garden!
