SAN ANTONIO – Recently, a San Antonio police officer named Christopher Cardiel was suspended for five days due to some serious misconduct involving his personal relationships. He was found to have used his position to access police reports about his girlfriend and her ex-husband, which raises some important questions about privacy and ethics in law enforcement.

The incident began on December 1, 2025, when Officer Cardiel called 911, claiming he had been assaulted by his girlfriend’s ex-husband. Reports indicate that when officers spoke to the ex-husband, he expressed concern, stating that Cardiel had told him, “I know everything about you because of what I do.” This statement hints at how he may have improperly used his access to police information.

The ex-husband was subsequently arrested for assault. However, an internal audit discovered that Officer Cardiel had looked at three police reports related to the situation, despite not having any official reason to do so. This misuse of access to sensitive information is a serious violation of departmental policies.

In addition to accessing the reports, authorities found text messages between Cardiel and the ex-husband, which included harassing messages from Cardiel. These texts were reportedly shared with the ex-husband’s attorney, further complicating the situation and demonstrating a lack of professionalism.

The records from his suspension clearly indicate that Officer Cardiel’s actions did not meet the expected standards of conduct for a police officer. As stated in the records, “The actions of Officer Cardiel did not conform to the ordinary and reasonable rules of good conduct and behavior.”

Cardiel has been with the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) since October 2022, and his five-day suspension took place in June 2026. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of ethical behavior and accountability in law enforcement, especially when personal relationships are involved. It is crucial for officers to maintain professionalism and respect for privacy, ensuring that their personal lives do not interfere with their duties.
