Climate change is making wildfires in Southern Europe more intense and frequent, especially in countries like Spain and France. Recent studies have found that human-caused climate change has dramatically increased the chances of extreme fire conditions, especially over the past eight years.
According to scientists from World Weather Attribution, the hot and dry conditions that led to Spain’s recent record-sized wildfires are now 20 times more likely to happen due to climate change. In France, the chances of experiencing extreme fire conditions have doubled. Over the last 26 years, the risk of severe wildfires in Spain has tripled, while in France, it has increased by 40%.

Another study published recently highlighted that the number of days with extreme fire-prone weather in Southern Europe has more than doubled compared to previous decades. This is alarming, as it indicates a significant shift in the climate that supports wildfires.
Researchers examined various factors that contribute to fire-prone weather, including temperature, drought, humidity, and wind. Friederike Otto, a climate scientist at Imperial College London, noted that the change in fire weather conditions in Spain is exceptionally significant, making this summer one of the hottest on record. Unusual weather patterns, like a wet January followed by severe drought, have created optimal conditions for wildfires.
An additional factor in Spain is land abandonment, which has left many areas with unmanaged vegetation that can easily ignite. In France’s Bordeaux region, dense pine groves also contribute to the fire risk.
While the World Weather Attribution report was released quickly and hasn’t undergone peer review, the methods used are scientifically accepted. Many findings from their studies often appear in peer-reviewed journals later.
Jacob Bendix, a fire scientist at Syracuse University, pointed out that this research confirms what scientists have long known: wildfires are becoming more frequent and intense due to climate change. The increase in heat and drought conditions is leading to more explosive fire behavior.
Raúl Cordero, a climate scientist from the University of Groningen, noted that the number of extreme fire weather days in Southern Europe has increased from about 10 days a year to around 25. These days are also significantly more intense than they were from 1981 to 2010.
Interestingly, the number of wildfires in Southern Europe had been decreasing until recently, thanks to better fire management techniques. However, climate change has overwhelmed these improvements, leading to a rapid increase in wildfire incidents.
Cordero emphasizes that no matter how many resources are allocated, it is nearly impossible to stop the spread of fires under extreme weather conditions. The climate is changing in a way that is challenging to manage.
John Abatzaglou, a fire scientist at the University of California Merced, stated that these findings demonstrate that climate change is not just a future problem; it is already impacting us today.
Otto concluded by urging immediate action to reduce fossil fuel consumption, stating that continued reliance on fossil fuels will only exacerbate global temperatures and worsen fire conditions. There are limits to how much we can adapt to these changes.
