SEATTLE – The Seattle Storm, a prominent team in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), issued an apology on Wednesday following an incident involving one of its co-owners and two fans during a recent game against the Indiana Fever. The Storm lost the game 105-95, but the focus shifted from the score to an unfortunate exchange that transpired in the stands.

Details regarding the specific comments made by the co-owner remain undisclosed, leaving fans and observers curious about the nature of the interaction. In a statement addressing the situation, Storm majority owner Ginny Gilder expressed regret for the incident, emphasizing the importance of maintaining an inclusive and welcoming environment for all attendees. “Everyone who attends a Storm game deserves to feel welcome, and we remain committed to creating an inclusive environment where every fan is treated with respect,” Gilder stated.

The incident occurred on the same night as a demonstration outside Climate Pledge Arena, which raised questions about whether the co-owner’s comments were related to the protest. This demonstration was organized to support Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham and to advocate for a statewide ballot initiative, IL26-638, aimed at preventing transgender students from participating in girls’ athletics in Washington schools.

Protesters at the event carried signs supporting Cunningham and wore T-shirts depicting XX and XY chromosomes, indicating the divisive nature of the ongoing debate surrounding transgender participation in sports. Inside the arena, Cunningham faced a mixed reception, receiving boos from Storm fans during her introduction and while attempting free throws.

Following the game, Cunningham was unavailable for media questions, leaving teammates Kelsey Mitchell and Monique Billings, along with head coach Stephanie White, to address the press. When the topic of the pregame protest and Cunningham’s comments arose, a Fever public relations representative clarified that neither the team nor Cunningham had any prior knowledge of the demonstration. “Our only goal as a team, whether at home or away, is to win basketball games and make Fever fans for life, and we are united in that mission,” the representative stated.

In response to questions about the protest and its implications, Storm head coach Sonia Raman reiterated the organization’s commitment to inclusivity. “Seattle and this organization and Climate Pledge, we always want to be an area where people feel welcome coming into this building,” Raman asserted. “I think we’ve always done a really good job with that.” She noted that efforts were made to ensure the safety and inclusion of all attendees at the arena during the game.

The incident underscores the complexities of sports as a platform for broader societal issues, particularly surrounding gender and inclusion. As the Seattle Storm navigates this situation, they are reminded of the crucial role they play in fostering a respectful and welcoming fan experience.
