Knicks coach on free throw disparity in Game 3: ‘Never thought I’d see that in an NBA Finals game’

NEW YORK – In a heated Game 3 of the NBA Finals, New York Knicks coach Mike Brown did not hold back in his criticism of the officiating. After witnessing the San Antonio Spurs shoot a staggering 24 free throws in the second half compared to the Knicks’ mere eight, Brown expressed disbelief at the disparity.

“I never thought I’d see that in an NBA Finals game, and I saw it tonight,” Brown remarked. This officiating inconsistency was a pivotal aspect of the game, influencing the outcome as the Spurs edged out the Knicks 115-111, narrowing New York’s lead in the series to 2-1 and snapping the Knicks’ impressive 13-game postseason winning streak.

While Brown acknowledged the Spurs’ commendable performance and highlighted areas for improvement within his own team, he maintained that the officiating played a crucial role in the game. “San Antonio is a great team. They are a great team, OK. It’s going to lower our odds big time, big time, if we play Game 4 and in the second half, they get 24 free-throw attempts to our eight,” he stated.

Brown elaborated further on the inequity of the fouls called, noting, “Maybe we were fouling. Maybe we were fouling. But they fouled, too.” The discrepancy was glaring, with the Spurs shooting 14 free throws in the third quarter alone, while the Knicks managed just three. Key players like Mikal Bridges and Jalen Brunson found themselves in foul trouble, limiting their contributions on the court.

“There are a lot of things we can do better and we are going to have to do better, but at the same breath, like I said, hopefully they will see some more fouls called against them, so it’s not 24-8,” Brown added. The close nature of the game made the free throw disparity even more critical, with Brown emphasizing that it was a four-point ballgame, making it tough for his team to overcome such a deficit.

Despite the frustration over the officiating, Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns pointed out that the referees were not the primary issue. “That didn’t cost us the game,” he said, attributing the loss to turnovers and a failure to execute the strategies that led to their impressive winning streak.

The Spurs finished the game with an impressive 25 for 32 from the free-throw line, while the Knicks were 18 for 22. As the series continues, both teams will have to adjust and overcome the challenges posed not only by each other but also by the dynamics of officiating in high-stakes games.
