WASHINGTON – Federal health officials have recently announced a significant increase in the number of states affected by a major outbreak of cyclospora, a parasite known to cause severe diarrhea. Originally linked to Taco Bell restaurants, the outbreak has now expanded to include Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania, in addition to the already identified states of Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), along with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and state health officials, are actively investigating the source of the outbreak. They are tracing the supply chain of the contaminated lettuce and interviewing individuals about their food consumption two weeks prior to becoming ill.

As of now, there have been 1,947 reported cases of illness linked to the lettuce served at Taco Bell, resulting in at least 98 hospitalizations. Fortunately, there have been no reported deaths associated with this outbreak. However, health officials caution that the actual number of cases may be higher, as many go unreported.

The FDA has identified Taylor Farms as a potential source of the outbreak. The company has initiated a recall of iceberg lettuce that was grown in central Mexico. Meanwhile, the FDA is also investigating another outbreak of cyclospora that has affected 72 people, although they have not yet pinpointed the products involved.

Overall, cyclospora cases have reached unprecedented levels in the U.S. Since May 1, the CDC has recorded over 4,100 confirmed cases and is reviewing more than 7,400 additional suspected cases across 41 states. Health officials have indicated that other brands, restaurants, retailers, or distribution channels may also be implicated as the investigation continues.

Cyclospora is a tiny parasite that can contaminate foods that have come into contact with human feces, often due to irrigation or washing with tainted water. When consumed, it can lead to severe gastrointestinal distress, characterized by frequent and sometimes explosive bowel movements.

Interestingly, health officials in Mexico announced that during their inspection of the Taylor Farms facility, no traces of the parasite were found in the lettuce or water samples collected. This inspection took place between July 18 and 20, where both lettuce and water samples were analyzed.
