PORTLAND, Ore. – In a thrilling playoff showdown, the San Antonio Spurs demonstrated resilience and skill, overcoming the absence of star player Victor Wembanyama to secure a 120-108 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers, taking a 2-1 lead in the first-round series.

Stephon Castle was the standout performer, scoring an impressive 33 points. His contribution was complemented by Dylan Harper, who added 27 points and 10 rebounds. The Spurs’ ability to rally from a 15-point deficit in the third quarter showcased their determination and team spirit, setting the stage for an exciting Game 4 on Sunday at the Moda Center.

Prior to the game, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson confirmed that Wembanyama would not be participating as he continues to recover from a concussion sustained during Game 2. This significant absence could have been a turning point for the Trail Blazers, who were aiming to capitalize on the situation during their first home playoff game since 2021.

Despite Jrue Holiday’s commendable performance, scoring 29 points for Portland, the Blazers were unable to maintain their lead. After leading 82-67 in the third quarter, they fell victim to a vigorous 21-5 run by the Spurs, who took an 88-87 lead into the final period. Castle’s clutch step-back jumper and free throws extended the Spurs’ lead to 105-95 midway through the fourth quarter, prompting a collapse from Portland.

Wembanyama, the league’s first unanimous Defensive Player of the Year and a finalist for the Most Valuable Player award, had been a critical asset for the Spurs throughout the season. Averaging 25 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and a league-best 3.1 blocks per game, his absence was felt deeply. Coach Johnson provided little information regarding his condition, stating only that he was making progress, leaving his status for Game 4 uncertain.

In Wembanyama’s absence, Luke Kornet stepped up, contributing 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Trail Blazers initially surged ahead with a 15-2 run in the first half, leading 65-59 at halftime, bolstered by Jerami Grant’s timely 3-pointer. However, a controversial moment occurred when De’Aaron Fox was charged with an offensive foul, only for the call to be overturned following a successful challenge by Johnson.

As the series progresses, both teams are gearing up for what promises to be a competitive Game 4. The Spurs will be looking to extend their lead, while the Trail Blazers will aim to even the score in front of their home crowd.
