KIRBY, Texas – The Kirby City Council is gearing up for a significant meeting this Wednesday evening, where they will discuss a potential removal of one of their own council members, Susan Street. Elected last year, Street represents approximately 8,000 residents in the city.
City Manager Brian Rowland initiated an investigation into Street, which will be one of the main topics during the council meeting. Street has expressed her concerns, stating, “They’re coming after me because I ask a lot of questions that they don’t want to answer.” She emphasizes that her inquiries, whether made during council meetings or through emails to the city manager, often go unanswered.
The meeting will not only focus on the investigation but will also consider whether Street should be removed from her position. Street believes her role is to ask the tough questions that residents want answered, especially regarding the city’s expenditures and the condition of local streets. “I got elected to ask the questions. That’s why the people voted for me,” she stated, highlighting the accountability expected from elected officials.
However, the process of removing an elected official like Street isn’t straightforward. According to the Kirby City Charter, a removal would necessitate a recall election. This requires a petition signed by registered voters, and if enough valid signatures are submitted, the matter would ultimately be decided by a vote.
As the council prepares for this pivotal discussion, questions linger about the implications of their actions and the power dynamics within their ranks. The outcome of the meeting could shape the future of local governance in Kirby and set a precedent for how elected officials are held accountable.
