SAN ANTONIO – For singer-songwriter Robert Earl Keen, Labor Day weekend at John T. Floore’s Country Store has transformed into more than just another concert event. It’s a homecoming, a reunion with fans, and a heartfelt way to give back to those who have supported him throughout his career.
Keen is gearing up for the fifth year of his Fan Appreciation Day, a free concert he started in 2022 to show gratitude to his loyal fans.
Reflecting on the event’s beginnings, Keen remembers his first performance at Floore’s, where he drew about 1,500 attendees during a Sunday afternoon slot. Since then, he has become a regular performer at the historic Helotes dance hall, playing multiple times each year.
Years later, the idea for Fan Appreciation Day came to him after noticing how often musicians express their gratitude to fans during interviews. “I got where I was yelling at my radio going, ‘Well, what are you doing for your fans?’ And then I thought, ‘What am I doing for my fans?’” Keen shared.
The answer was simple: host a free concert. Due to the limited capacity of Floore’s, Keen distributes around 3,500 tickets through a random lottery, ensuring that a large number of fans can join the celebration.
Keen takes pride in personally curating the lineup, featuring artists he admires. He describes the event as a vibrant showcase of Americana music, blending traditional country with rock, pop, and blues influences.
His hope is that other musicians will follow suit and create similar events for their supporters. “I think artists can afford to get out there and really do something palpable,” he said, emphasizing the importance of connecting with fans.
Keen is committed to keeping this tradition alive, stating, “If I retired again, I’d still do Fan Appreciation Day.” This sentiment highlights his dedication not only to his craft but also to the community that has supported him for years.
