SAN ANTONIO – Two weeks ago, an AMBER Alert concerning a missing teenager sent ripples through the San Antonio community. This incident, which garnered significant media attention, concluded with the girl’s safe return. However, a deeper investigation into the case reveals the crucial role played by a local nonprofit organization in reconnecting her with her family.

Christian Assistance Ministry (CAM), a nonprofit dedicated to providing short-term emergency support for those in crisis, was instrumental in piecing together the events surrounding the teenager’s disappearance. Their mobile shower unit, which caters to the needs of dozens of individuals daily, served as the backdrop for this pivotal moment.

“We assist approximately 600 people per month,” stated Roger Arreola, CAM’s Homeless Response Coordinator, emphasizing the organization’s vital services.

On the day in question, Arreola and Tarvis Brown, CAM’s site coordinator, noticed a teenage girl accompanied by a significantly older man. Dawn White-Fosdick, CAM’s President & CEO, recounted her attempts to engage the girl in conversation, highlighting the delicate balance between concern and privacy.

“We’re walking that fine line of care and concern,” White-Fosdick expressed, noting the complexity of the situation.

As the staff at CAM strategized on how to proceed, Brown engaged the man, ensuring he was occupied while Arreola conducted further inquiries. The breakthrough came when a client at the facility recognized the girl from an AMBER Alert flyer circulating in the community. “He showed me the flyer that had been circulated. He said, ‘What do you see in this picture?’ And I said, ‘Oh, my god,’” Brown recalled, underscoring the serendipitous nature of the discovery.

The recognition prompted CAM to notify the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, leading to a swift reunion between the teenager and her family. White-Fosdick emphasized the importance of community vigilance, stating, “We’ve had many cases like that where we’ve actually found people.”

The success of this intervention reflects the organization’s commitment to not just providing services, but also fostering community awareness. Brown remarked, “Community awareness is key,” highlighting the collective responsibility in safeguarding vulnerable individuals.

Following the incident, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that both the teenager and the adult man were questioned, with the male being released after no criminal offense was reported. This case serves as a reminder of the vital role community organizations play in not only addressing immediate needs but also in promoting safety and awareness among residents.
