NEW YORK – In a surprising turn of events, Major League Baseball’s (MLB) pitch clock could not contain the excitement of the game between the New York Yankees and the Miami Marlins. This thrilling matchup, which took place on Saturday night, resulted in a 9-7 victory for the Yankees, but what caught everyone’s attention was the game duration: a staggering 3 hours and 49 minutes.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, this game marked the longest nine-inning contest since the pitch clock was introduced for the 2023 season. In fact, it was the first time since a September 27, 2022, game where the Boston Red Sox triumphed over the Baltimore Orioles in a 13-9 effort that a nine-inning game exceeded such a lengthy duration.

Prior to this encounter, the record for the longest nine-inning game since the pitch clock’s implementation was held by an August 15, 2024, game where the Oakland Athletics defeated the New York Mets, lasting 3 hours and 45 minutes.

During the Yankees and Marlins showdown, a total of 379 pitches were thrown by 13 pitchers. The Marlins’ pitching staff struggled with control, issuing 10 walks, which brought their total to 21 walks over the first two games of the series. The game also saw 21 runners left on base, with the Marlins accounting for 12 of those missed opportunities.

Interestingly, the average time for a nine-inning game in MLB has dramatically decreased since the pitch clock was introduced. In 2022, the average game duration was 3 hours and 4 minutes. With the implementation of the clock, the average dropped to 2 hours and 40 minutes in 2023 and further declined to 2 hours and 36 minutes in 2024, marking the lowest average since 1984’s 2 hours and 35 minutes. However, the average time for games rose to 2 hours and 38 minutes last year.

The trend of increasing game durations had previously seen the average time surpass 3 hours for the first time in 2016, peaking at a record 3 hours and 10 minutes in 2021. The introduction of the PitchCom electronic pitch-calling device in 2022 contributed to a reduction, bringing it back down to 3 hours and 4 minutes.

This recent game serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of baseball, where even the best-laid plans and rules can lead to extended and thrilling contests.
