DENVER – The Denver Broncos are facing significant challenges this season, struggling with offensive output, defensive injuries, and special teams inconsistencies. Nevertheless, they continue to find ways to secure wins.
In a thrilling overtime match on Thursday night, Ja’Quan McMillian intercepted a crucial pass from Sam Darnold, setting up Wil Lutz for a game-winning 53-yard field goal that clinched a 17-14 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.
Despite a rocky start to the season, the Broncos emerged from a challenging six-week stretch with a commendable 4-2 record, albeit with an injury-laden roster and inconsistent quarterback play. For the Seahawks, this marked their second loss in five days, matching their total defeat count from the previous season when they clinched their second Super Bowl title.
The Broncos’ offensive struggles were evident, with quarterback Bo Nix throwing for just 107 yards and running back J.K. Dobbins leading the ground game with a mere 41 yards. The team managed only three first downs and a total of 168 yards—less than half of the Seahawks’ 353 yards.
“I don’t know why we can’t really push the ball vertically right now,” Nix admitted postgame. “But defenses are just sitting back and hanging out. … Hopefully we find a way to get more out of it.” His candid remarks highlight the ongoing difficulties the Broncos face in generating explosive plays on offense.
Meanwhile, the Broncos’ defense stepped up yet again, hitting Darnold 17 times and securing five sacks. Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald acknowledged this, stating, “The quarterback’s getting hit way too much. Everybody sees that.” Darnold himself praised the Broncos’ defensive prowess, referencing their strong scheme and talented coordinator, Vance Joseph.
The pivotal moment came during Seattle’s opening drive in overtime when McMillian snagged a pass intended for Rashid Shaheed at the Denver 43-yard line. This marked Darnold’s second interception of the night, as he completed 27 of 51 passes for 278 yards without a touchdown.
To tie the game, Jason Myers successfully kicked a 34-yard field goal with just three seconds left in regulation, capping an 11-point run by the Seahawks in the final 5.5 minutes. The drive began at midfield after a significant 31-yard punt return by Shaheed.
“No moral victories in the league,” Macdonald stated. “It’s a bottom-line business, a production business. But I’m proud of our effort. I’m proud of the resolve of the team.” He emphasized the need for improvement in key areas, which they are committed to addressing.
Sean Payton, the Broncos’ head coach, echoed similar sentiments in the winning locker room. “Defensively, we were magnificent,” he remarked, while also acknowledging the team could easily have a record of 2-4 instead of 4-2.
The Broncos initially appeared to have secured their victory when Kris Abrams-Draine intercepted a Darnold pass at the Denver 30-yard line with 1:25 remaining in regulation. However, the Broncos squandered this opportunity by burning only 15 seconds before punting.
After struggling to score on their first eight drives, the Seahawks finally found their rhythm, executing an 11-play, 67-yard drive that culminated in a one-yard touchdown run by running back George Holani. Darnold’s successful two-point conversion pass to Shaheed brought Seattle within striking distance at 14-11 with just over five minutes left.
Dobbins had a four-yard touchdown run, and fellow running back R.J. Harvey added another score on a direct snap for a 14-3 lead at halftime. The Seahawks’ promising first-half drive ended abruptly at the Denver 34-yard line when Nik Bonitto forced a fumble that was recovered by linebacker Justin Strnad.
In terms of overtime performance, the Seahawks fell to a 19-30-1 record, while the Broncos improved to 33-23-2, marking the second-best overtime record in the NFL.
“It was a good win,” Payton concluded, “but we’ve got a lot of work to do.”
Injury Updates: Seahawks TE Elijah Arroyo exited the game late in the first half with a right shoulder injury sustained while diving for a fumble. The Broncos were missing star CB Patrick Surtain II and starting safety Talanoa Hufanga due to ankle injuries, and RB Tyler Badie suffered a thumb injury in the second quarter.
Looking Ahead: The Seahawks will host the Kansas City Chiefs on October 25, while the Broncos are set to face the Arizona Cardinals on the same date.
