LOS ANGELES – In a commanding performance, Ajay Mitchell recorded career playoff highs with 24 points and 10 assists, propelling the Oklahoma City Thunder to a decisive 131-108 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 3 of the Western Conference second round. This win places the Thunder on the cusp of advancing to the Conference Finals, extending their perfect playoff record to 7-0.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander also contributed significantly with 23 points and nine assists, highlighting the Thunder’s dominance, especially against a Lakers team led by LeBron James. Remarkably, Oklahoma City has now defeated the Lakers in all seven encounters this season, establishing themselves as a formidable force in these playoffs.
Game 3 mirrored the dynamics of Game 2 closely; the Lakers struggled to match the intensity and efficiency of the defending champions. Despite a valiant effort, Los Angeles could not maintain pace, especially during a critical third quarter where the Thunder outscored the Lakers 33-20. Chet Holmgren added 18 points and nine rebounds to bolster Oklahoma City’s efforts.
“I think (the first half) wasn’t our best half, and in the locker room we just talked about it and knew that we had to adjust and be better,” Mitchell remarked, noting his consistent scoring ability throughout the series. This marked his sixth consecutive game scoring at least 14 points, showcasing his development as a key player for the Thunder.
As the series progresses, the Thunder look to close it out in Game 4 on Monday night in Los Angeles. The Lakers, however, face mounting pressure to respond. LeBron James finished with 19 points, eight assists, and six rebounds, but he, along with teammate Austin Reaves, combined for a disappointing 12 for 32 shooting night. Rui Hachimura’s 21 points were insufficient to keep the Lakers competitive.
“We had moments in the first half that were really good for us,” James acknowledged. “In the third quarter, we didn’t knock down shots, we didn’t defend or get stops and allowed them to take us out of the game.” Such lapses have plagued the Lakers, who have lost five of their last six games since mid-April.
Despite facing intense defensive measures, Gilgeous-Alexander managed to score effectively, indicating his resilience even when he struggled early on. “These obviously haven’t been my best performances,” he stated, “but I think I’ve been able to help the team win, and that’s most important.” His focus on team success over individual accolades exemplifies the Thunder’s collective mindset.
For the Lakers, Luke Kennard contributed 18 points, but the absence of NBA scoring champion Luka Doncic, who has missed 14 consecutive games due to a hamstring strain, continues to weigh heavily on the team’s performance. Coach JJ Redick expressed optimism despite the loss, emphasizing that the Lakers still have a chance to turn the series around. “They’re an incredible basketball team,” he said. “We’re going to try to extend the series.”
As the Thunder prepare for Game 4, they will aim to maintain their momentum and secure a place in the Conference Finals. Meanwhile, the Lakers must regroup quickly to keep their championship hopes alive.
