SAN ANTONIO – Three individuals have been arrested and two vehicles have been towed during recent Spurs celebrations on SW Military Drive, as reported by the San Antonio Police Department. These incidents highlight the potential dangers that can arise during public celebrations following sporting events.
Viral videos circulating on social media depict chaotic scenes of celebration on the roads, including the lighting of illegal fireworks, individuals hanging out of vehicle windows, and reckless driving behaviors such as burning rubber. Such actions not only pose risks to those involved but also to bystanders and the broader community.
According to police reports, two people were specifically apprehended on SW Military Drive for reckless driving, with one individual facing additional charges for unlawful carrying of a weapon. A third arrest was made related to an outstanding warrant. In contrast, the police noted that no arrests were made in connection with celebrations occurring downtown, suggesting that the nature of festivities may vary by location.
Local residents have expressed concern over the safety of these celebrations. One neighbor remarked on the chaos, stating, “[It’s dangerous], people honking, getting out of their cars and fireworks and all that.” Rick Mendiola, a long-time resident of the area, reminisced about the celebrations during the Spurs’ earlier championship victories, comparing the past to the current situation.
“First time Robinson won and with Duncan, we were all out here,” Mendiola recalled. “We were celebrating good times.” He continued to share that celebrations back then were more subdued and safer, focusing on honking horns and cheering rather than engaging in dangerous activities.
The SAPD spokesperson emphasized the importance of safety during celebrations, urging fans to enjoy the victory while also being mindful of the potential hazards associated with reckless behavior. They encouraged fans to celebrate responsibly, ensuring that the joy of victory does not overshadow the well-being of the community.
