KYIV – In a significant escalation of hostilities, Russia launched a large aerial assault in and around Ukraine’s capital early Tuesday morning, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 11 lives and injuring over a dozen others, including three children, according to local authorities.
The Ukrainian air force reported that the assault commenced at 6 p.m. on Monday, deploying a mix of ballistic, cruise, and anti-radar missiles, in addition to 218 drones and decoys. Notably, about a third of these drones were jet-powered, indicating a shift in the scale and sophistication of the attacks.

The primary targets identified by the air force included the Kyiv and Odesa regions, as outlined in a statement on Telegram.
This recent wave of strikes marks the sixth consecutive day of Russian assaults on Kyiv, following an unprecedented series of air raid alerts that have plagued the region since last week. The relentless onslaught has created a climate of fear and instability for residents, with air raid warnings sounding almost continuously.
During the overnight strikes, civilian infrastructure and residential buildings in various districts of Kyiv were hit, leading to eight fatalities within the city limits and three additional deaths in surrounding areas.
In the Darnytskyi district alone, Russian strikes claimed the lives of seven individuals, with one person sustaining serious injuries that required hospitalization. At another site in the same district, an explosion injured two individuals, including a child.
An additional fatality occurred in the Holosiivskyi district, where a non-residential building was struck and subsequently caught fire. In the Solomianskyi district, a drone strike impacted a residential structure, prompting emergency workers to rescue a man and a woman trapped under the debris.
Beyond the capital, three more individuals lost their lives in the greater Kyiv region, while 12 others were reported injured. In Boryspil, three vehicles were engulfed in flames due to the strikes.
Emergency crews managed to evacuate 48 people, successfully rescuing two trapped individuals. Among the injured were eight individuals, including two children. Tragically, two fatalities and three injuries were also reported at an infrastructure facility in Boryspil, where a truck was set ablaze, and a service station was damaged.
The Odesa region also faced significant attacks overnight, with damage to civilian infrastructure and one reported injury, according to regional head Oleh Kiper. Strikes damaged two residential buildings and ignited a fire at a sewing factory. Additionally, the Orlivka international ferry crossing on the Romania border was targeted.
Ukrainian forces reported successfully destroying or suppressing 199 aerial targets in the course of the attacks, which included five ballistic missiles and 187 drones. The missile and drone strikes were recorded at 28 locations, with debris from intercepted targets falling at another 10 sites, illustrating the scale of the ongoing conflict.
