HONDO, Texas – A Hondo family is heartbroken after the tragic loss of their 15-year-old son, Caleb Remmy, who was described as a source of laughter, kindness, and joy. Caleb was laid to rest on a somber Friday, nearly two weeks after he was shot and killed on October 19. His mother, Emily Remmy, and grandmother, Lori Williams, are left with cherished memories of a boy who they believe had so much more life ahead of him.
Emily and Lori remember Caleb as a funny, outgoing kid who filled their home with energy and laughter. “Caleb was the loudest kid in my home,” Emily said, reminiscing about his vibrant personality. “He was small, but he had the biggest heart. You couldn’t get your feelings hurt or be sad without Caleb shedding tears with you.”
Caleb loved many activities typical for a boy his age—drawing, building Lego sets, and playing with his younger siblings. He enjoyed riding bikes with friends and playing basketball. His family emphasized that his kindness was just as memorable as his great sense of humor.
Now, the family finds themselves mourning the milestones Caleb will never reach. His 16th birthday, first job, graduation, marriage, and the joys of becoming a parent are all moments Emily had dreamt of sharing with her son. However, in a tragic turn of events, everything changed in an instant.
On the night of Caleb’s shooting, he had asked his mother if he could go to a nearby convenience store with friends, a routine outing they often enjoyed together. Less than ten minutes later, Emily received a distressing call. She rushed to the scene near the store, only to find her son lying on the ground.
As a nurse, Emily recognized the severity of Caleb’s condition. “The last few breaths, I recognized those as a sign that it wasn’t good. He lost his pulse, so I started CPR,” she recalled, desperately trying to save him.
According to Hondo police, officers responded to reports of a shooting around 9:34 p.m. Caleb was found with a gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
Through their investigation, police identified a 16-year-old minor from Uvalde, who was detained in connection with the shooting. A search warrant led to the recovery of a firearm believed to be involved in the incident. Due to the suspect’s age, his identity has not been disclosed.
As the family copes with their profound loss, they are determined to seek justice for Caleb. Emily expressed a desire for the person responsible to be held accountable while hoping that Caleb’s story serves as a reminder that violence is never the solution. “We want young people to choose a different path,” she stated.
For Lori, the reality of losing her grandson feels surreal. “He’s just a boy. He’s just a boy, and I just didn’t feel like it could be real,” she said, her grief palpable.
Caleb would have celebrated his 16th birthday next month—a milestone his family will face without him. They hope to honor his life in a special way and encourage everyone who knew him to keep his memory alive.
