SAN ANTONIO – On Saturday, South Texas Blood & Tissue held a unique blood donation event that combined community support with a love for basketball. Donors were incentivized with exclusive Spurs merchandise, including a ‘Go Spurs Go’ rally towel and a stylish Spurs hat, making the act of giving blood even more rewarding.
“People love their Spurs, they love San Antonio, and they love supporting the team. Since we started giving out Spurs merch at the beginning of the playoffs, we have seen over a thousand donors come in to give blood,” shared Roger Ruiz, spokesperson for South Texas Blood & Tissue. This initiative not only boosts blood donations but also fosters a strong sense of community pride.
Among the donors was Pete, a dedicated Spurs fan who expressed his excitement at receiving new merchandise. “(I’m) a big Spurs fan, so this is just icing on the cake to come on a Saturday morning,” he remarked, illustrating the fun and engaging atmosphere of the event.
Pete has a commendable track record of giving, having donated blood eight times, which equates to a gallon of blood—enough to potentially save up to 24 lives. “It’s always humbling to know that with each donation you’re saving three lives, but to get to that 24 mark, it’s amazing,” he reflected, emphasizing the impact of each blood donation.
The efforts of South Texas Blood & Tissue extend beyond local donations. Recently, they dispatched more than 12 gallons of blood to assist victims of a mass shooting in Midland, showcasing the organization’s commitment to community health and safety. “This is a great way to give back to your community and restock our supply. We are still on call just in case we need to send more additional units to Midland,” Ruiz added, highlighting the critical nature of their work.
Events like these not only promote vital blood donations but also strengthen community bonds, reminding us all of the importance of coming together in times of need. The combination of sports enthusiasm and altruism serves as a powerful motivator for many San Antonians to participate in life-saving measures.
