SAN ANTONIO – Business owners in Southtown are expressing optimism about the potential increase in foot traffic that a new downtown arena for the San Antonio Spurs could bring. This enthusiasm comes despite the recent setback in the proposal to secure city funding for the arena.

On Monday, the San Antonio City Council voted 5-6 against Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones’ effort to place the funding initiative for the downtown Spurs arena on the upcoming November ballot. This decision reflects a divided opinion among city officials and the community regarding the financial priorities for San Antonio.

Houston Carpenter, co-owner of Beau’s Tiny Diner, commented on the council’s decision, stating, “I think she is trying to look out for the city, but we’ve already voted.” Carpenter’s sentiment echoes the views of many Spurs fans who feel that the construction of a new arena is essential for continuing the legacy of the team.

Elliot Rodriguez, a dedicated Spurs fan, shared his personal connection to the team, saying, “The Spurs brought me memories as a kid. They are bringing my kids memories.” This generational attachment to the team underlines the emotional significance of the Spurs in the San Antonio community.

However, not all residents share the same enthusiasm. Some individuals, who preferred to remain anonymous, expressed skepticism about whether investing in a new arena is the best use of municipal funds, particularly in light of other pressing community needs.

Despite the divided opinions, Rodriguez remains hopeful. “I think we’d still get the votes we need,” he remarked, reflecting the ongoing dialogue within the community regarding the future of the Spurs and the potential new arena.
