In a significant development for the Atlanta Falcons, edge rusher James Pearce Jr. has been suspended for the first eight games of the 2026 NFL season due to a violation of the league’s personal conduct policy. This announcement was made by the league on Friday, emphasizing the seriousness of the matter.
The suspension stems from an incident that occurred in February, where Pearce was arrested following a domestic dispute involving his ex-girlfriend, Rickea Jackson, a player in the WNBA. The altercation took place in Doral, Florida, raising concerns about the player’s off-field behavior.
Currently, Pearce faces serious charges, including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, fleeing police, resisting arrest, and misdemeanor stalking. However, there is a possibility that these charges could be dropped if he successfully completes a pretrial intervention program. This program includes requirements such as random drug tests, maintaining a distance from Jackson, and avoiding any legal troubles for one year.
Despite the impending suspension, Pearce will be allowed to participate in preseason games and team activities until the suspension officially takes effect on Sunday, August 30. He will be eligible for reinstatement on Monday, November 2, following the Falcons’ Week 8 road matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Notably, the Falcons are scheduled to play the Cincinnati Bengals in Madrid, Spain, the following week, making this an important date for the team.
This situation severely impacts the Falcons’ pass rush, especially after the recent season-ending ACL tear of Jalon Walker. James Pearce Jr. was selected by the Falcons with the 26th pick in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Johnson, on the other hand, will be eligible to return for the Titans’ home game against Cleveland on October 25, while Mathis can make his comeback for Buffalo’s home game against New England on October 4.
