CLEVELAND – In an exhilarating start to the Eastern Conference playoffs, the Cleveland Cavaliers showcased their dominance with a commanding 126-113 victory over the Toronto Raptors in Game 1 of their first-round series. The Cavaliers’ star player, Donovan Mitchell, led the charge with an impressive 32 points, complemented by Max Strus’s remarkable 24 points off the bench.
James Harden contributed significantly as well, contributing 22 points and 10 assists, while Evan Mobley rounded out the strong performance with 17 points and seven rebounds. This decisive win sets the stage for Game 2, scheduled for Monday night, as Cleveland looks to maintain their momentum.
Strus’s performance was particularly noteworthy, marking a playoff career high for the young player. After missing the first 67 games of the season due to a broken left foot sustained during offseason training, his return to form has been a pivotal development for the Cavaliers. “When you see the work he’s put in all season, it’s for this moment, right? This is a regular occurrence with Max, maybe not 24 (points), but just the energy level and boost he gives us,” Mitchell praised, highlighting Strus’s resilience and commitment.
On the other side, the Raptors, who were playing their first playoff game since 2022, faced challenges, including the absence of point guard Immanuel Quickley due to a mild right hamstring strain. RJ Barrett led the Raptors with 24 points, while Scottie Barnes added 21. Jamal Shead, who stepped in for Quickley, also made a notable contribution with 17 points, including five successful three-pointers.
The Raptors briefly threatened to close the gap when Barrett’s three-pointer cut the Cavaliers’ lead to 45-41. However, Cleveland responded decisively with a 27-9 run that spanned the final moments of the second quarter and the opening minutes of the third. Strus played a crucial role in this surge, scoring 11 points during the stretch and demonstrating his shooting prowess by making all three of his three-point attempts.
Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson emphasized the importance of maintaining composure during the game, particularly in the first half. “We just kept saying in the timeouts (during the first half to) stay with it. We’re going to get separation,” he remarked, underlining the team’s focus and determination to build confidence heading into halftime.
Cleveland’s largest lead of the game reached 24 points, highlighted by Sam Merrill’s three-pointer early in the fourth quarter. Despite the Raptors’ league-leading average of 18.9 three-pointers per game, the Cavaliers’ defense held them to a mere three successful attempts, showcasing a strong defensive strategy.
Reflecting on the game, Raptors coach Darko Rajakovic acknowledged the difficulties faced by his team: “If we allow our opponent to score 126 points, it’s going to be tough to beat them. Unfortunately, we had a very bad start to the third quarter with lack of execution. We were way too stagnant tonight.”
As the series progresses, both teams will look to adjust and capitalize on their strengths. Cleveland’s blend of offensive firepower and defensive resilience will be key as they aim for a deeper playoff run, while Toronto will need to regroup and find their rhythm to respond effectively in the upcoming games.
