NEW YORK – The Tampa Bay Rays have clinched their fifth American League East title, a feat accomplished with a decisive 6-1 victory over the New York Yankees in the second game of a day-night doubleheader. This win not only marks their first division crown since 2021 but also secures home-field advantage throughout the American League playoffs.
Drew Rasmussen was instrumental in this victory, allowing just one hit while striking out 11 batters over seven innings. His dominant performance was a highlight of the game, as he became just the second pitcher in Rays history to come close to a no-hitter. The only hit he surrendered came in the seventh inning, a leadoff double by Heliot Ramos.
The Rays, with a current record of 96-61, have opened up a six-game lead over the second-place Yankees (90-67) with only five games remaining in the regular season. This victory is a significant milestone for the team, which also celebrated AL East championships in the 2020 season, the 2010 season, and their inaugural winning season in 2008.
Yandy Díaz was another standout player, delivering a two-run single in the seventh inning off reliever John Schreiber and adding another two-run single in the ninth. This performance marked Díaz’s 175th hit of the season, leading the American League.
In the earlier game of the doubleheader, the Yankees managed to delay the Rays’ celebration with a 2-0 victory, thanks to Carlos Rodón’s impressive eight-inning performance, where he allowed just three hits. Taylor Walls started the scoring for Tampa Bay in the second game with a well-placed bunt single, taking advantage of an uncovered first base.
Rasmussen’s performance was remarkable, throwing a career-high 114 pitches with 72 strikes. He demonstrated exceptional control, throwing first-pitch strikes to 17 of 24 hitters and achieving his fourth career game with double-digit strikeouts.
Following Rasmussen, Cam Booser and Bryan Baker pitched an inning each to complete the three-hitter, showcasing the depth of the Rays’ pitching staff.
The Yankees have struggled offensively this season, being held to three hits or fewer for the 13th time, highlighting the challenges they have faced in their lineup.
Looking ahead, the Rays are set to face the Yankees again, with Tampa Bay’s Ian Seymour (9-7, 4.38 ERA) pitching against New York’s Gerrit Cole (9-9, 3.63 ERA) on Wednesday night.
