BOULDER, Colo. – In a bold move following Colorado’s first loss of the season, head coach Deion Sanders has dismissed several players from the Buffaloes football team. The decision, made public on Tuesday, underscores a commitment to team discipline and accountability.
While Sanders did not disclose the names of the players involved, he emphasized that their dismissals were the result of a pattern of detrimental behavior rather than solely arising from the team’s 41-7 defeat at Northwestern. “It’s never one thing,” he stated. “Those guys will tell you: I’m the most loving, giving and forgiving man you can ever meet. But when you start being conduct detrimental to the team that will set us back in things that you’re doing — you don’t care about the team. You care about you. I have a problem with that.”
Reflecting on the previous season, which ended with a disappointing 3-9 record, Sanders acknowledged that he had previously hesitated to take firm action in similar situations. “A year ago, I didn’t put my foot down in it enough,” he explained. “It lingered a little bit. Then, it imploded. I’m not doing that. I’m not doing that anymore.”
In light of recent events, defensive back Ben Finneseth publicly apologized after being caught on video making derogatory remarks about Northwestern’s temporary stadium before the game. In the video, he can be heard saying, “(expletive) sounds like a (expletive) library. It’s football.” Finneseth later addressed the media, admitting, “It was childish. It was a stupid thing that I said. It won’t happen again, and the way I handled it was horrible. I promise you guys that it will not happen again, and it will be much more mature moving forward. So I apologize.”
Sanders, known for his charismatic coaching style, expressed his frustration following the loss. He remarked, “I don’t understand how you can have joy in a loss, especially when I’m upset and I’m walking right behind you.” Taking responsibility for the season’s trajectory, he stated, “I don’t push the buck and push the blame on anyone else. It’s on me.”
With the Buffaloes currently holding a record of 2-1, the team is eager to rebound from their recent performance, which included four turnovers and nine penalties for 80 yards. Sanders asserted, “A loss by 10, a loss by three, a loss by 30 — it hurts me. There’s no degrees of loss. Like, there’s no degrees of sin. A sin is a sin. A loss is a loss to me.”
As the Buffaloes prepare to face Baylor this Saturday, the coaching staff is scrutinizing every aspect of the team’s performance, particularly their discipline on the field. So far this season, Colorado has accumulated 28 penalties for 247 yards. This lack of discipline has frustrated Sanders, who emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and composure during games.
“Then when you get out from the field and you’re undisciplined, I don’t understand,” Sanders said. “It’s hard to fathom. We’re challenging them to be who they say they want to be.”
The impact of these dismissals is being felt throughout the team, as players like linebacker Tyler Martinez acknowledge the gravity of the situation. “It’s hard to see somebody go,” Martinez said. “Like Coach Prime said, it’s about the team. If you’re about yourself, got to do what’s best for us.”
In a positive turn, several team leaders have approached Sanders, expressing a desire to proactively address issues before further dismissals are necessary. “I applaud them for that,” Sanders said. “coming to me ready to get ahead of it.”
As the Buffaloes aim to restore their momentum in the upcoming game, the focus remains on fostering a culture of accountability and unity within the team.
