SAN ANTONIO – In a pivotal moment for the San Antonio Spurs, both De’Aaron Fox and Dylan Harper are set to return to the lineup for Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals on Friday. This news is particularly significant as the series stands tied, adding an extra layer of urgency to the matchup. Unfortunately, the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Jalen Williams has been ruled out of the game, which could impact the Thunder’s performance.
Prior to the game, all three players were listed as questionable, but their statuses were updated just 45 minutes before the scheduled tip-off. Williams, who had played in Game 1 after a six-game absence due to a hamstring injury, experienced tightness in his left hamstring during Game 2 and will not be able to play.
The 6-foot-6 wing has struggled with recurring hamstring issues throughout the season, limiting him to just 33 games during the regular season. His absence will be felt as he had shown flashes of his potential before the injury.
On the other hand, Fox’s journey back to the court has been closely watched. He missed the first two games of the series following an injury sustained when Minnesota guard Ayo Dosunmu rolled onto his right leg during a critical playoff victory on May 15. Although Fox finished that game, he was sidelined for the subsequent matches, and Spurs coach Mitch Johnson has indicated that his injury may be a lingering issue as long as the team remains in the postseason.
Harper, who stepped up to fill the void left by Fox, also faced a setback. He made his first two postseason starts in place of Fox but exited Game 2 with a right adductor strain after landing awkwardly. His condition adds another layer of complexity to the Spurs’ lineup strategy.
Addressing the injuries and their impact, Coach Johnson noted, “I can tell you there are games that people are playing right now that wouldn’t be playing in the regular season. That’s what I mean by different. I think there are levels of competitiveness and urgency, and as of right now, we’re at the height of that. So, you just try to make sure you keep some of these guys from themselves and their own competitiveness and desire to be out there because, again, their well-being is still the priority.”
