According to Teri Youngdale, Gail’s daughter and primary caretaker, scans reveal that the amyloid plaque associated with Alzheimer’s disease, which was previously present in nine distinct areas of her brain, has now disappeared. “She doesn’t have any plaque at all anymore, and they’re just not seeing the plaque beginning to build up again,” Teri shared.
Despite the positive changes, Gail remains realistic about her condition. “I don’t have all of my memory back, but most of it,” she stated, reflecting on her journey. Her progress has garnered attention, leading to her being featured in a national public awareness campaign for World Alzheimer’s Month, which commenced on September 1.
The campaign, orchestrated by the BrightFocus Foundation, aims to raise awareness and funding for Alzheimer’s research. Gail and Phil Mercer first crossed paths in junior high but did not date until they reconnected at a high school reunion nearly 50 years later. “That night at the reunion, Gail kissed me,” Mercer recounted, laughing with his wife. Their romance blossomed, culminating in their marriage, which they celebrated just last Sunday.
Mercer has become an integral part of Youngdale’s support system as she navigates her journey with Alzheimer’s treatment. Having completed the 18-injection Leqembi treatment, Gail is now on an additional medication, and she reports feeling well. “I’m glad to help Gail and to help her with her journey to help other people,” Mercer said, showcasing his commitment to her care.
In a charming twist, Gail mentioned that Mercer is learning to cook, which allows her to step back from the kitchen. “He’s a really good cook,” she noted, a compliment from someone with a degree in home economics and a lifetime of culinary experience.
