Southwest Legacy has already faced its share of challenges this season. Their Week 1 game was delayed due to inclement weather, resulting in an unusual 9 a.m. kickoff on a Friday. Senior tight end and defensive end Devon Lucio reflected on the team’s ability to adapt: “We went into that Thursday game pumped up for the first week, and then we got shut down. We had to carry that same momentum and excitement into the morning.”
On the other side of the field, the South San Bobcats, ranked No. 12 in Class 5A and led by coach Phil Barron, enter the game with a 1-0 record. After graduating their starting quarterback and several key playmakers from last season, the Bobcats have shown resilience. Junior quarterback Jacob Sepeda highlighted the importance of their opening win against Harlandale, stating, “It was very important that we beat Harlandale, and they came out strong. It was a close fight, but we won that one inch.”
The Bobcats are aware that they will be facing a tough opponent in Legacy. Junior running back Isaiah Rodriguez noted the challenges posed by the Titans’ speed and aggressive defense: “They’re going to be a tough team. They’re fast and they blitz a lot, so we’re going to be working on that this week.” Senior fullback and defensive end Cash Winters echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for thorough preparation to compete effectively.

We want to see how we respond in those situations. So far, our kids have responded, but there’s still some stuff we need to address and work on. There’s no perfect game. We strive for that, and right now, we’re still striving for that.”
Looking ahead, Coach Barron mentioned the strategic value of this game in preparation for upcoming district opponents, particularly emphasizing the challenge presented by facing a Class 6A team. “After Legacy, we have a bye week and then John Jay,” he said. “This is a really good game to prepare us for our district opponents. Legacy is a 6A ball club, so we’re looking forward to the challenge.”
