In a significant shift for the Baylor Bears football program, the university announced the firing of head coach Dave Aranda on Sunday, following over six seasons at the helm. Aranda’s dismissal came on the heels of a disappointing 25-24 loss to Kansas, a game that marked the Jayhawks’ first victory over Baylor since 2007, ending a 14-game losing streak. The loss dropped Baylor’s season record to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the Big 12 Conference.

Taking over as interim head coach for the remainder of the season is defensive coordinator Joe Klanderman, who previously joined Baylor from Kansas State. This decision underscores the urgency Baylor feels to regain competitiveness in the Big 12, especially after the recent struggles under Aranda’s leadership.

Aranda was initially hired in 2020 and achieved remarkable success in 2021, guiding the Bears to a Big 12 Championship and a Sugar Bowl victory. However, the subsequent seasons have seen a decline, with only one winning season to his name, culminating in a career record of 40-40 at Baylor.

The pressure had been mounting on Aranda to revitalize the program, particularly heading into his seventh season. In an effort to turn things around, he hired Klanderman to manage defensive play-calling and secured transfer quarterback DJ Lagway from Florida, who is a Texas native.

Doug McNamee, Baylor’s vice president and athletic director, expressed his respect for Aranda, stating, “Anyone who knows Dave Aranda understands what a genuine and honorable person he is and how much he deeply cares for his players, staff, and this university. He is a gifted coach and a brilliant football mind whose leadership brought some of our best Baylor football memories.” Despite the challenges faced, McNamee emphasized the belief that a leadership change is necessary for the program’s future.

Looking ahead, Baylor’s next challenge will be against UCF, who recently triumphed over then-No. 2 BYU in a thrilling double overtime match. This upcoming game on Friday will be crucial for Klanderman as he steps into this interim role, aiming to steer the team back to winning ways.
