DALLAS – In an exciting matchup on Saturday night, the San Antonio Spurs overcame early season struggles to claim their first victory of the season, defeating the Dallas Mavericks 122-106. Victor Wembanyama led the charge with 23 points, seven rebounds, and four blocks, showcasing his potential as a rising star in the NBA.

The Spurs’ victory was a welcome relief after back-to-back losses earlier in the week against Oklahoma City and Houston. Alongside Wembanyama, Dylan Harper contributed significantly with 22 points, while De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle each added 19 points, demonstrating the depth and talent of San Antonio’s roster.

For the Mavericks, rookie Sergio de Larrea provided a bright spot off the bench, scoring 21 points and hitting 3 of 4 attempts from beyond the arc. However, Dallas struggled without their star players. Cooper Flagg, last season’s Rookie of the Year, was sidelined with a shoulder injury sustained in a previous game, and nine-time All-Star Kyrie Irving opted out of the second game of a back-to-back set.

Despite a rocky start, Wembanyama found his rhythm midway through the second quarter, scoring 12 points by halftime, including two spectacular alley-oop dunks. His performance was pivotal, especially as the Spurs managed to outscore the Mavericks 30-17 in the final quarter, much to the delight of the visiting fans who took over the American Airlines Center.

In a display of tenacity, the Spurs secured 15 offensive rebounds, leading to a significant advantage in second-chance points, where they outscored Dallas 25-10. Conversely, the Mavericks made history by scoring 46 points in the paint during the first half, the highest for the franchise since the introduction of play-by-play tracking in the 1997-98 season, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Looking Ahead

The Spurs are set to host the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday, aiming to build on this momentum as they look to improve their standing in the Western Conference. Meanwhile, the Mavericks will head to Miami on Monday, hoping to bounce back from this defeat and reintegrate their star players into the lineup.
