WASHINGTON – Republicans are set to gather in Dallas this week for a groundbreaking two-day convention, inspired by former President Donald Trump. This event aims to galvanize support ahead of the crucial midterm elections.

Trump envisions a political spectacle reminiscent of the party’s quadrennial presidential nominating conventions, intended to showcase the party’s vision for America. Notably, the convention will conclude with a grand balloon drop, adding a festive touch to the proceedings.

Historically, Republicans have not held midterm conventions, a practice that was more common among Democrats during the 1970s and 1980s. Here’s what to expect on Wednesday and Thursday:

Purpose of the Convention

The idea for this convention has been a long-standing aspiration for Trump, who believes that the event will invigorate Republican enthusiasm and encourage higher voter turnout. Midterm elections typically present challenges for the party in power, and Trump is keen on leveraging this convention to rally his base.

“Pretend, please, that I’m on the ballot,” Trump remarked at a recent event in South Carolina, urging supporters to show up and vote.

While the convention aims to energize the Republican candidates for November’s elections, it will also reflect on the accomplishments of Trump’s presidency. Despite some challenges in polling, Trump remains optimistic that highlighting his record will bolster Republican chances.

Attendees of the Convention

Unlike traditional presidential nominating conventions, this event will not involve any nominations, as those have already been determined through primary contests. The convention is open to the public, creating a dynamic atmosphere akin to a Trump rally.

More than 100 Republican House members and candidates are anticipated to attend, each contributing $25,000 for tickets and accommodations—standard for political conventions. However, some lawmakers in competitive districts have expressed uncertainty about their attendance.

Speakers at the Convention

Trump is scheduled to speak each evening, delivering a keynote address on Wednesday and appearing again on Thursday after a speech from Vice President JD Vance. The lineup includes notable figures such as Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr.

Additionally, House Speaker Mike Johnson, Texas Senator Ted Cruz, and various incumbents and candidates from key competitive races will take the stage to share their perspectives. Everyday Americans will also be featured, recounting their experiences under Trump’s policies.

Organizers plan to host over 50 speakers or presentations each night, keeping remarks brief to maintain an engaging pace suitable for online sharing.

In line with Trump’s theatrical style, he has promised “lots of Great Entertainment,” branding the event as “a RALLY like none other.”

Focus Areas of the Convention

The convention will spotlight the party’s candidates, particularly Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton, whom Trump controversially endorsed over incumbent Senator John Cornyn. Despite facing scandals, Paxton’s candidacy is viewed by Democrats as a potential vulnerability in an otherwise solidly conservative state.

Much of the program will be dedicated to promoting Trump’s agenda, which includes topics such as immigration policy, prescription drug price reductions, tax reforms, and trade tariffs. Expect speakers to adopt Trump’s rhetoric, characterizing Democrats as radical.

In conclusion, this unprecedented gathering seeks to energize the Republican base and set the stage for the upcoming midterm elections, all while reflecting on the legacy of Trump’s presidency.
