In a noteworthy effort to uphold the cultural heritage of South Texas, U.S. Representative Vicente Gonzalez, a Democrat from McAllen, has taken a stand for Boca Chica Beach. This beloved beach, which has gained prominence as the site of SpaceX launch activities, was recently threatened with a name change to “Cyber Beach.” This proposal stemmed from a fan of SpaceX who applied to the U.S. Board of Geographic Names in November 2024, seeking to formalize the name change.

The U.S. Board of Geographic Names, which operates under the U.S. Geological Survey, had previously changed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, following an executive order from former President Donald Trump. However, in this instance, the Domestic Names Committee of the Board ultimately voted against the name change, reflecting the overwhelming community opposition that Gonzalez and others rallied to express.

In response to the initial proposal, Gonzalez introduced the “Hands Off Our Boca Chica Beach Act.” This bill aims to officially protect the name Boca Chica Beach and mandates that the U.S. Board of Geographic Names notify local Congressional representatives of any proposed name changes affecting their districts.

“It is absurd that a name proposal from outside our state was able to threaten the very essence of a cultural and historic landmark in South Texas,” Gonzalez remarked. He highlighted the lack of transparency from the Domestic Names Committee, which nearly excluded local voices from the decision-making process and could have resulted in significant financial implications for local governments responsible for updating signage and other identifiers.

The name change proposal was first submitted by Josh Hazel, a Mississippi resident and member of a group known as “Starship Enthusiasts,” who gather at the beach to watch SpaceX launches. Hazel’s application argued for a formal recognition of the beach as “Cyber Beach,” claiming it would honor the site where interplanetary travel commenced. Despite this, the committee received nearly 2,780 emails opposing the name change, with only one in favor.

Community leaders, including State Representative Erin Gamez, emphasized the historical significance of Boca Chica Beach, which has been documented under that name since 1936. Gamez articulated that changing the name would not only disrupt the cultural identity of the area but also incur substantial costs for local governments needing to update maps, signs, and official documents.

The Texas Geographic Names Committee, which collaborates with the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, also opposed the proposal, citing that “cyber” is closely linked to organizations like SpaceX and thus inconsistent with the Board’s naming policies. Furthermore, many local officials, including State Senator Adam Hinojosa, voiced their support for preserving the existing name, arguing that both progress and preservation can coexist.

The committee’s unanimous rejection of the name change proposal illustrates the power of community engagement in protecting local heritage. Had the change been approved, it would have been enacted immediately, although it would have taken time for the new name to be reflected in official records.

This situation serves as a reminder of the importance of local agency in decisions that deeply affect community identity and heritage. As discussions around Boca Chica Beach continue, the efforts of Representative Gonzalez and community advocates highlight the significance of public involvement in preserving historical names that resonate with local culture.
