McALLEN — In a significant display of civic engagement, residents of McAllen, Texas, voiced their concerns at a city commission meeting on Monday regarding the potential opening of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in their community. The meeting saw a turnout of nine speakers, all united in their demand for transparency and opposition to any public funding that could facilitate the establishment of such a facility.

“I want to continue being proud of all that my city does for our community, but for that, we need transparency and we need communication,” stated Alexis Saenz, a concerned McAllen resident. Saenz urged the city commissioners to reject any public funding, approvals, or local resources that could support ICE’s operations.

The warehouse in question is situated within an industrial park in McAllen’s trade corridor, located less than five miles from the Anzalduas International Bridge. This site was identified in a list of potential locations for ICE facilities that circulated online in February. The growing apprehension among residents reflects a broader trend across the United States, where communities are increasingly pushing back against the use of local facilities for immigrant detention.

In addition to the McAllen site, another facility in the Dallas area was also mentioned as a potential location for ICE operations. The owner of the Dallas facility, Majestic Realty Co., confirmed that while they had been approached regarding the potential sale of the property, they had no intention of entering into an agreement with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to use the building as a detention center.

As of now, details regarding ICE’s plans for the McAllen warehouse remain scarce. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has paused the purchase of warehouses as part of a review process concerning contracts established under former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem. Moreover, local city officials have reported a lack of communication from the federal government about the potential facility, leaving them and the community in the dark.

In a text message to The Texas Tribune, McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos expressed his frustration, stating he had not received any updates regarding the issue. This lack of information has prompted community leaders like Isaac Amani Newman, co-founder of For the People Alliance, to stress the importance of engaging elected officials on the matter. Newman’s organization has previously mobilized residents successfully to oppose other controversial projects, demonstrating their commitment to civic activism.

“We need to know where our city leaders even stand on this to begin with,” Newman emphasized, highlighting the necessity for public discourse on such pivotal issues.

Following the residents’ public comments, City Commissioner Rudy Castillo acknowledged that he had not been aware of the issue prior to the meeting but expressed his support for placing the matter on a future agenda for discussion. “I’m glad people came out,” Castillo remarked. “Our voice will be heard if we speak.”

This gathering of concerned citizens underscores the importance of community engagement in local governance, especially regarding sensitive subjects like immigration and detention. The future of the proposed ICE facility in McAllen remains uncertain, but the determination of residents to advocate for transparency and accountability is clear.
