MAGA Inc. cavalry arrives for Paxton in Texas Senate as Trump’s PAC places $10 million ad buy

In a significant move for the upcoming Texas Senate race, MAGA Inc., the leading super PAC supporting former President Donald Trump, has announced a substantial ad buy of $10 million. This investment highlights the race’s critical importance to Trump’s political strategy and indicates a highly competitive electoral environment.

The allocation of funds is split evenly: half will promote Republican candidate Ken Paxton, a staunch Trump ally, while the other half will focus on negative messaging aimed at Democrat James Talarico. This expenditure, disclosed in a recent Federal Election Commission (FEC) filing, marks MAGA Inc.’s initial financial commitment in the general election cycle.

MAGA Inc.’s ad buy follows involvement from another high-profile Republican figure, Elon Musk, whose America PAC has already spent $1.4 million targeting Talarico through digital media and print. The intervention comes at a time when Republicans have been urging Trump to engage in the Texas race, especially as recent polls suggest Talarico holds a narrow lead over Paxton.

Fundraising figures reveal the competitive nature of the race, with Talarico raising over $30 million in the second quarter, compared to Paxton’s $9 million. Analysts have characterized the contest as a toss-up, which is notable given that Democrats have not won a statewide race in Texas for over three decades.

MAGA Inc. spokesperson Alex Pfeiffer emphasized the stakes of the election, stating, “High Tax Talarico wants to take money out of Texans’ pockets. MAGA Inc. is going to ensure Texas knows about Talarico’s radical policies and elects Ken Paxton to the U.S. Senate.”

The super PAC has released two 30-second advertisements focusing on tax policy, promoting Paxton’s economic plans, which emphasize tax breaks on healthcare and housing expenses. In contrast, the ads criticize Talarico for his property tax policies, particularly highlighting his vote against a bill requiring elections for tax revenue increases exceeding 3.5%.

The ad messaging conveys a clear dichotomy: “Talarico? Higher taxes. Paxton? Lower taxes. A clear choice.” Talarico’s platform, however, advocates for raising taxes on corporations and billionaires while enhancing tax credits for parents and lower-income workers. A spokesperson for Talarico refuted the claims made in the ads, asserting that they misrepresent his tax record.

“Billionaire-backed dark money groups are lying about James Talarico because they’re scared of the people-powered movement we’re building,” said Talarico spokesperson JT Ennis. “James was proud to vote for the largest property tax cut in Texas history and has consistently voted to cut taxes for working Texans.”

Despite significant ad spending in other competitive Senate races, the Senate Leadership Fund, aligned with Senate Majority Leader John Thune, has not yet invested in Texas. Thune has publicly urged Trump to allocate resources to Texas, emphasizing its vital role in maintaining a Republican majority in the Senate.

As the race progresses, further ad spending from MAGA Inc. is anticipated. Trump, who has indicated control over nearly $1 billion among various PACs and nonprofits, expects to invest between $400 million to $500 million in the midterm elections.

The cost of running statewide ads in Texas is substantial, with estimates of $8 million per week for television alone. Campaigns benefit from discounted rates for broadcast ads, allowing them to maximize their reach; however, MAGA Inc.’s buy focuses on connected television and digital platforms, where all players compete on equal footing.

Currently, Talarico’s campaign has outspent Paxton’s allies, with $41.7 million in total ad spending compared to Republicans’ $24.3 million in the Senate race. This trend could lead to unprecedented spending by November, potentially reaching $200 million, surpassing previous records for Texas Senate races.

As the election approaches, both candidates are ramping up their efforts to connect with voters. Paxton has received air support from various pro-Paxton PACs and has been bolstered by Trump’s endorsement, while Talarico has introduced himself to voters through a mix of positive and negative advertising.

The Texas Senate race is shaping up to be a crucial battleground for both parties, with implications that could resonate far beyond the Lone Star State.
