WASHINGTON – On Thursday, the White House announced that it is withdrawing the nomination of Lance Schroyer to lead U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This decision means that ICE, a key agency in President Donald Trump’s domestic agenda, will continue to operate without a Senate-confirmed leader for the foreseeable future.

Lance Schroyer, a former Oklahoma state trooper, is known to be close to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who previously served as a U.S. senator from Oklahoma. However, Schroyer has limited experience with immigration issues, which has raised concerns among critics.

The White House did not provide much detail in their statement regarding the withdrawal. When President Trump nominated Schroyer in June, he praised him on his Truth Social platform, calling him “a PATRIOT with real operational experience” and highlighting his “proven leadership with DECADES of experience locking up the worst of the worst.”

It’s important to note that ICE has not had a Senate-confirmed leader since the Obama administration. David Venturella, who returned to the agency as acting director earlier this year, took over after Todd Lyons resigned. The lack of a confirmed leader continues to create uncertainty within the agency and among those who follow immigration policy closely.
