This heart-wrenching event prompts nations worldwide to unite in the fight against climate change. It’s a fictional scenario that feels alarmingly possible today.
For years, scientists have sounded the alarm about increasingly severe weather events, including heat waves, storms, floods, and droughts. While these predictions once seemed like distant possibilities, they are now viewed as likely, if not inevitable, realities.

The notion of facing an “extreme of extremes” is frightening. Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at the California Institute for Water Resources, mentions the “Boy Who Cried Wolf” scenario. He warns, “If it’s outside the door, wouldn’t you want to know?”
The risks associated with climate change have been understood for over 150 years. Climate scientist Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick emphasizes that even achieving net-zero emissions won’t stop constant extreme weather events. Carbon dioxide remains in the atmosphere for hundreds of years, meaning the damage we’ve inflicted will likely take centuries to mend.
“It’s the issue of the frog in the boiling water,” Perkins-Kirkpatrick explains. “If we get used to bracing ourselves, are we going to notice?”

The discomfort around discussing worst-case scenarios is a psychological barrier. Many people naturally want to avoid uncomfortable topics like climate change. Instead of taking proactive steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions or adapt to our changing world, individuals and governments often choose to ignore the issue.
Sonia Seneviratne, a Swiss climatologist, warns that the risk of extreme weather events increases with every fraction of a degree of temperature rise. “If such an event happened, I could already see the criticism of people saying, ‘Climate scientists didn’t tell us,’” she states. “But we did.”
While earthquakes are unrelated to climate change, the proactive measures taken by California to prepare for such disasters can serve as a model. Lucy Jones, a seismologist, has been instrumental in promoting earthquake preparedness. She emphasizes that people will respond if they believe the risks are real and manageable.
“Climate denial is one way of coping,” Jones explains, noting that some people rationalize by convincing themselves that the climate crisis isn’t real.
In popular culture, movies often depict extreme weather events in dramatic fashion. While some films offer hope, others suggest doom is inevitable. In the 2004 film “The Day After Tomorrow,” a climate scientist warns about impending disasters, only for his predictions to come true in catastrophic fashion. Conversely, the 2021 satire “Don’t Look Up” humorously illustrates the apathy toward existential threats, culminating in a grim ending.
Science tells us that catastrophic climate events aren’t a matter of “if,” but “when.” The physics of greenhouse gases indicates that more severe weather is on the horizon. Over the past 50 years, more than half of all greenhouse gases produced by humans have been released, contributing to heat and disrupted weather patterns.
Predicting the timing of a major climate event remains uncertain. It could happen in 10 years, 50 years, or even sooner.
