EDMOND, Okla. – In a shocking incident that has left the community reeling, an 18-year-old man named Jaylan A. Davis was arrested in connection with a mass shooting at a nighttime party beside Arcadia Lake. This tragic event occurred on Sunday night and has resulted in the death of one woman and injuries to 22 others.

The Edmond police stated that an argument during the party escalated, leading to multiple individuals firing weapons. Police Chief J.D. Younger indicated that over 80 rounds were discharged during the chaos, and they suspect there may be at least one additional suspect still at large.

Initially charged with assault with a deadly weapon, Davis’s charge is expected to be upgraded to felony murder following the death of 18-year-old Avianna Smith-Gray, who succumbed to her injuries. Smith-Gray was a high school senior with dreams of graduating, as described by her family on a fundraising page created to help cover funeral costs. Her loved ones remembered her as a vibrant person who enjoyed dancing, singing, and caring for others.

Davis turned himself in on Wednesday morning after an arrest warrant was issued. He is currently being held at the Edmond jail with a bond set at $1 million. As of now, no attorney has been assigned to him, as the Oklahoma County Public Defender’s Office indicated they would wait for the upgraded charges to be filed.

Among the injured, six victims are juveniles, with some as young as 15. The police confirmed that the gathering had been promoted on social media and attracted a large crowd of young adults from the surrounding Oklahoma City area. According to Chief Younger, the situation began with a dispute between two women and escalated into violence involving rival gang members.

Interestingly, the shooting occurred just as officers were responding to noise complaints about the party, which had not secured the necessary permits for such a large gathering. Chief Younger expressed a commitment to seeking justice for all those affected by this tragic event, emphasizing the importance of understanding the circumstances surrounding the incident.

As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of Smith-Gray and supports the many individuals impacted by the violence. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of conflict and the need for dialogue and resolution in our communities.
