BOSTON – A jury recently convicted Alvin Campbell, the brother of Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell, of multiple sexual assaults. These crimes occurred between 2017 and 2019, during which he posed as a rideshare driver to target and deceive women.

The jury found Campbell guilty on 21 out of 22 charges, which included serious offenses like aggravated rape, kidnapping, and photographing individuals without their consent. The Suffolk County district attorney’s office stated that the jury was unable to reach a decision on one of the rape charges.

Campbell now faces a maximum sentence of life in prison for aggravated rape, with sentencing scheduled for June 29. Prosecutors highlighted his calculated approach in targeting women outside bars and other venues, exploiting their vulnerability.

Andrea Campbell made history in 2023 as the first woman of color to hold statewide office in Massachusetts. Following the verdict, a spokesperson for her office did not immediately respond to requests for comment. However, Andrea has previously discussed her family’s struggles with the criminal justice system, including her brother’s ongoing legal issues.

In a past interview, she remarked, “One thing I do frequently is share my story because I think there are so many who carry their story with a sense of shame and don’t want to talk about it.” She emphasized that sharing these experiences can empower others.

After the trial, Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden noted that he had not yet spoken with Attorney General Campbell about the case. He described Alvin Campbell’s actions as “deceivingly and calculatedly” preying on women, expressing sympathy for the victims.

Hayden also expressed gratitude to the survivors who testified, stating, “We’re happy that we were able to secure justice and accountability for them and so we thank them.” This case serves not only as a reminder of the importance of justice for victims but also highlights the ongoing conversations about safety and awareness, particularly regarding rideshare services.
