6 people have been arrested for allegedly running a marriage fraud ring, federal authorities say

Wedding rings were exchanged, and photos of a smiling bride and well-dressed groom made it look like these were legitimate marriages. However, federal authorities revealed a shocking truth behind these ceremonies.

On Wednesday, prosecutors charged six individuals, including the alleged ringleader Jennifer Gonzalez, with operating an elaborate marriage fraud scheme in Massachusetts that lasted for a decade. This operation allegedly helped numerous immigrants obtain legal status through fake marriages, netting millions of dollars in the process.

Gonzalez and the other five individuals reportedly participated in around 20 sham marriages. Each marriage cost immigrants between $38,000 and $40,000. The charges against them include harboring illegal aliens, conspiracy to commit marriage fraud, and more.

“What an affront the alleged conduct revealed here today must be to those who play by the rules,” said U.S. Attorney Leah Foley. “To see a for-profit business whose sole purpose is helping people cheat and skip the line by simply paying for it must be so offensive and disheartening to those who follow our country’s laws.”

Five of the six defendants were arrested on the same day the charges were announced, while a sixth is already serving time in state prison for a firearms-related crime.

According to Foley, Gonzalez profited from this fraudulent scheme to the tune of millions, using the money to invest in businesses and real estate in the Dominican Republic. Despite her actions, she is an American citizen.

During her initial court appearance, Gonzalez’s attorney declined to comment, and a hearing is scheduled to determine if she will be held in detention during the ongoing case.

These arrests are part of a larger effort to combat marriage fraud, especially in the context of stricter immigration policies implemented during previous administrations. For example, in August, authorities charged 11 individuals in a separate scheme involving Chinese nationals who fraudulently obtained green cards through sham marriages.

Three years ago, a similar case in Massachusetts led to the conviction of a Philippine national who arranged fake marriages between foreign nationals and American citizens. In both instances, the fraudulent actions undermined the legal marriage process.

In this latest case, prosecutors indicated that their investigation is still ongoing. Some defendants allegedly submitted false information on applications for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), even claiming they had never been married. Gonzalez is accused of misusing $120,000 in SNAP benefits, alongside engaging in other fraudulent activities related to housing and unemployment.

Importantly, none of the immigrants who participated in these sham marriages have been charged with any crime. The focus remains on the individuals orchestrating the fraud.

“Marriage fraud undermines the processes that ensure honest, lawful individuals can marry United States citizens and enjoy everything the United States has to offer,” stated John Soares, assistant special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations in New England. “Fraudsters, like the individuals arrested today, make that process more difficult.”
