SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio man was sentenced to 10 years in prison Monday after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the 2023 shooting death of his sister’s husband outside a North Side home, according to court records.
David Juarez entered the plea on October 19 before Judge Jennifer Pena, as recorded in Bexar County court documents. He will serve his sentence in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
The incident occurred on January 14, 2023, when Felix Lee Vega, 36, was shot in the 6400 block of Ridge Creek Drive. After being shot, he was rushed to a hospital but sadly died about eight hours later.
According to an arrest affidavit, Vega and Juarez had an argument before the shooting. The argument followed a night out with family and friends that began at a San Antonio Spurs game. After the game, Vega, who was driving, stopped in front of Juarez’s home and knocked on the door multiple times. Video from a nearby home captured the moments just before the shooting, showing Vega walking back to his truck when two gunshots were fired.
A witness reported to the police that Juarez had grabbed a gun and fired twice through a bedroom window, claiming he only intended to scare Vega. However, the affidavit indicates that evidence did not support Juarez’s version of events, as Vega was sitting in his truck and posed no immediate threat. Furthermore, Juarez did not call 911 after the shooting, raising further questions about his actions.
Initially, Juarez faced a murder charge but opted for a plea deal, accepting a manslaughter charge on Monday. This case underscores the tragic consequences of impulsive actions during heated moments and the importance of conflict resolution without resorting to violence.
