SAN ANTONIO – U.S. Representative Joaquin Castro, a Democrat from San Antonio, has urged U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to release a local teenager and his father who have been detained at the Dilley detention center for over three weeks.

The teenager, identified as Alejandro, was reportedly on his way to a high school soccer game when ICE agents surrounded his home. His father, Jairo, was also detained during this incident. According to Castro’s statement, Alejandro has missed critical final days of his 10th-grade school year due to this detention.

During a visit to the detention center on May 26, Castro met with both Alejandro and his father. Castro reported that Alejandro expressed feelings of loneliness, stating that he misses his mother and is struggling with his appetite while in detention.

Castro emphasized that Alejandro and Jairo are asylum seekers who have followed the proper legal channels in their quest for refuge. He highlighted the need for humane treatment of individuals in similar situations, advocating for their release from detention.

This case sheds light on the broader issue of immigration policy and the treatment of asylum seekers in the United States. Experts note that the detention of families, particularly those seeking safety, raises significant ethical questions and can have lasting impacts on the well-being of children.

As the situation continues to unfold, community leaders and advocates are calling for reforms that prioritize the dignity and rights of all individuals, especially vulnerable families seeking asylum.
