WASHINGTON – National Guard service members and U.S. Park Police have been actively patrolling the area around the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. This increased security comes as the Trump administration is under pressure to rectify issues stemming from a recent renovation and cleaning project that has faced significant criticism, particularly with the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration approaching.
The situation escalated following Trump’s statements regarding “multiple arrests” made in connection with the damage observed in the pool’s new lining, which was part of a renovation project costing over $14 million. The liner, intended to enhance the aesthetics of the pool, has been marred by a substantial algae bloom, a problem that has plagued the Reflecting Pool for decades.
In a bid to address these issues, the president has confirmed that repairs will likely necessitate draining the pool again. However, as of now, specifics regarding the timeline for these repairs remain vague. Contractors and federal workers have been employing various methods, including chemicals and ozone nanobubbles, to combat the algae growth.
Originally, Trump promoted the refurbishment as a means to clean and beautify a site he claimed had fallen into disrepair under previous administrations. His vision included a striking ‘American flag blue’ coating, personally selected by him, meant to transform the pool into a visual centerpiece along the National Mall. However, just weeks after declaring the rehabilitation complete, the pool was engulfed by a vibrant green algae bloom that obscured the new coating. Observations indicated that parts of the liner were beginning to detach, with one piece measured at approximately four feet square floating in the water.
On social media, Trump has attributed the issues to “SICK, DERANGED PEOPLE!” He alleged that intentional acts of vandalism included a “300 foot long gash” and that “chemicals have been illegally placed in the water.” The assertion of vandalism has not been substantiated, and even if there were deliberate actions taken against the liner, they do not account for the algae bloom, which appears to be more intense than prior occurrences.
The fallout from this renovation has not only drawn attention from the public but has also led to a number of arrests. For instance, David Hearn, a 67-year-old former Olympic canoe racer from Bethesda, Maryland, was detained after he reached into the pool to inspect the peeling coating. He described the experience, stating, “I’m a curious citizen,” and expressed surprise at the rubbery texture of the material.
As security remains tight around the Reflecting Pool, the Park Police have not clarified how many arrests have been made or whether any formal charges have been filed. The Metropolitan Police Department of Washington has indicated that it is not involved in the ongoing situation.
The legal implications of reaching into the Reflecting Pool remain ambiguous, and Trump has hinted at possible criminal consequences for those he accuses of defacing federal property, referencing relevant laws intended to protect national monuments.
