SAN ANTONIO – The Northside Independent School District (NISD) is making strides in educational technology by partnering with OpenAI to implement ChatGPT for Teachers. This initiative signifies a growing trend among school systems that are increasingly integrating artificial intelligence as a valuable resource for both classroom instruction and administrative tasks.
The rollout of the program is slated to begin in October, providing teachers with the option to utilize this tool to enhance their teaching practices. Importantly, participation is not mandatory; educators can choose to integrate ChatGPT into their workflows as they see fit. “This is just another tool in their toolbox, that when they are ready to use it, it’s available for them,” stated Kris Trejo, assistant superintendent of technology services for NISD.
Trejo acknowledged that many teachers and staff are already leveraging free AI tools independently, leading the district to explore the benefits of a structured partnership with OpenAI. “We’re exploring just the opportunity to participate in OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Teachers Initiative,” Trejo explained. The partnership aims to uphold key principles such as information security, data privacy, and accessibility while ensuring educators have the resources they need.
OpenAI originally launched ChatGPT for Teachers in 2025, specifically tailored for educators and school systems. This program assists teachers in a variety of tasks including lesson planning, brainstorming, creating classroom materials, and drafting communications, thereby streamlining their administrative workload.
Since its inception, OpenAI has expanded the program to nearly 150,000 teachers and staff, with recent announcements highlighting partnerships with 55 additional school systems across 20 states. As of now, ChatGPT for Teachers is available to over 100 K-12 organizations in 30 states, benefiting more than 300,000 educators and staff.
In Texas, prominent districts participating in this initiative include NISD, Houston ISD, Fort Worth ISD, and Dallas ISD, among others. NISD, being the largest school district in San Antonio, serves approximately 97,600 students across 133 schools and employs around 13,000 staff members.
Importantly, NISD views ChatGPT not as a replacement for educators but as a supplementary resource. Trejo emphasized that the district’s goal is for teachers to determine how and when the technology can be beneficial. “We want to ensure that AI complements teaching rather than replaces human decision-making,” he said.
The district is already utilizing other AI tools, as many staff members have access to Google’s Gemini through their Google Workspace. Additionally, MagicSchool AI is another approved resource for educators. This variety of tools reflects NISD’s commitment to exploring innovative technology solutions while maintaining a balance between AI and human interaction in educational settings.
OpenAI’s stance aligns with NISD’s philosophy. Leah Belsky, OpenAI’s vice president of education, articulated the company’s vision of empowering teachers rather than replacing them. “Education has always helped young people prepare for the world they’re going to inherit,” she stated. “In the age of AI, students need educators and schools that help them build judgment, confidence, and agency with these tools.”
A significant advantage of NISD’s partnership with OpenAI is the enhanced control over how the technology is accessed and utilized. Trejo explained that the district aims to create a managed environment that prioritizes security, privacy, and accessibility. “We essentially own how the application is accessed and used,” he noted.
OpenAI has designed ChatGPT for Teachers with specific educational privacy, security, and administrative controls in mind. Information shared within a ChatGPT for Teachers workspace is not utilized to train its models by default, allowing school and district leaders to implement role-based access controls for better management.
NISD will not mandate the use of ChatGPT; rather, it will be an optional resource for educators seeking to enhance their teaching practice. Trejo stated, “Success for us is allowing it and allowing our amazing teachers to start using it if they feel that it’s something that could be of use to them in the teaching learning space.”
OpenAI has confirmed that ChatGPT for Teachers will remain free for verified U.S. K-12 educators through June 2028, ensuring continued access to this innovative educational tool.
