SAN ANTONIO – In a troubling incident that has raised concerns about pet safety and community well-being, Animal Care Services (ACS) has taken custody of a pit bull that attacked an 80-year-old woman on the Northwest Side of San Antonio. The incident occurred on Thursday, and while the dog is now in custody, police have yet to confirm whether the animal’s owner has been located.
According to the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD), the woman was outside her home when the dog attacked her face. The dog had been brought to the residence by the woman’s granddaughter and her boyfriend, who were visiting at the time. Fortunately, the granddaughter acted quickly to restrain the dog and prevent further injury.
The elderly woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was subsequently hospitalized. SAPD and ACS later found the dog inside the home, where it had been contained after the attack.
This incident is not an isolated case; SAPD has responded to six calls at this residence over the past year, including two previous reports of animal bites. Beatrice Funderburk, a local resident, revealed that her daughter had a frightening encounter with the same dog just last week. “The dog ran towards my daughter, broke off the chain, and knocked her over into the street,” Funderburk recounted. “As soon as it knocked her over, it started attacking her.”
Due to concerns about the dog’s medical history, Funderburk indicated that her daughter is undergoing rabies vaccinations. An ACS spokesperson confirmed that in Funderburk’s case, the dog’s owner had been uncooperative and failed to comply with legal quarantine orders.
Local resident Nancy Guevara expressed similar fears, stating, “We’ve been dealing with this for about a year. Every single time we saw the dog, we were afraid because it’s a big dog.”
At this time, ACS has not disclosed the future of the dog or whether its owner will face any criminal charges or citations. As the community grapples with these events, many residents are left wondering about the steps that can be taken to ensure safety for all.
