Edwards Aquifer rose 7+ feet after recent rain. Is it enough to put a dent in drought conditions?

SAN ANTONIO – Recent rainfall in the San Antonio area has brought a significant boost to the Edwards Aquifer, raising its levels more than seven feet since Friday. This surge in water levels is particularly noteworthy, as it represents more rainfall than the entire year of 2026 combined.

The Edwards Aquifer is a vital source of drinking water for the San Antonio community, comprising a network of underground caves that function like a sponge during rainy periods. For the aquifer to recharge effectively, it is essential for rain to fall directly on the designated recharge zone, which stretches from Kinney County in the west to Hays County in the east.

Since Saturday, some regions within the recharge zone have received up to six inches of rain, providing a much-needed reprieve from the persistent drought that has plagued South Texas for over four years, beginning in January 2022.

Last May, the aquifer recorded its lowest levels since conservation efforts began, dipping around 40 feet below the average water levels. This alarming decline has prompted drought restrictions that have become commonplace for residents in South Texas.

While the recent rains have certainly been beneficial, experts caution that they have not entirely resolved the ongoing water scarcity issues faced by the region. According to Spivey from the San Antonio Water System (SAWS), there is no immediate cause for concern regarding the drinking water supply.

“SAWS has the Edwards Aquifer as a water supply, but it also has other water sources,” Spivey noted. “So it’s not just the Edwards Aquifer; it’s just that the Edwards Aquifer is the largest source of our drinking water in San Antonio.”

As San Antonio continues to navigate its water management strategies, both the recent rainfall and the aquifer’s recovery will be closely monitored to ensure that the community has access to safe and reliable drinking water.
