SAN ANTONIO – A ministry works to ensure that Bexar County children have something many families take for granted — a safe, comfortable bed of their own.
The Child of God Bed Ministry, in collaboration with volunteers from Woodland Church, has made a significant impact in the community by delivering more than 600 handmade beds since its inception in 2021, benefiting over 250 families throughout Bexar County. Notably, many of these deliveries have taken place in the East Side neighborhoods, particularly in Districts 2 and 3, where families face greater challenges.
This dedicated group focuses on assisting families connected with Texas Child Protective Services and domestic violence shelters. Their mission is clear: to help children remain safe in their homes and provide them with a stable place to rest.
“Our goal is to keep children with their families and out of CPS care,” said Pastor Garrett Vickrey of Woodland Church, emphasizing the importance of stability for children in vulnerable situations.
The beds are constructed by volunteers, which not only helps to reduce costs but also ensures that the furniture is sturdy and reliable. Many of the children receiving these beds may otherwise be sleeping on the floor or sharing cramped spaces with siblings.
“Building a bed is much cheaper than buying one,” said Tim Son, the founder of the Child of God Ministry. “If you look at these beds, they’re significantly sturdier than what you can purchase in stores.”
Each bed costs approximately $250 to make. Despite rising lumber prices, Son confirms that constructing the beds remains more affordable than retail options.
For many volunteers, participation in the ministry transcends mere carpentry. The greatest reward comes from witnessing the joy on a child’s face when they see their new bed for the first time.
“The smiles, the laughter, the joy when the kids see the bed for the first time — it’s just a wonderful experience,” Son expressed, highlighting the emotional impact of their work.
