UVALDE COUNTY, Texas – In a harrowing incident that underscores the dangers faced by migrants, eight individuals, including a child, were rescued from a locked train car last Sunday by Border Patrol agents. This rescue was reported by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), highlighting the critical role of law enforcement in protecting vulnerable populations.
The migrants were discovered during routine inspections by Border Patrol agents. A trained canine located them hidden inside vehicles on a train, with no means to escape. This discovery was vital, as the heat in the region poses significant risks to individuals trapped in confined spaces.
Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Anthony “Scott” Good emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, “Smugglers have no regard for those they prey upon. Temperatures in this area exceed 100 degrees daily. Were it not for the actions of our highly trained agents, this situation could have had a tragic outcome.” This statement reflects the urgent nature of migrant safety, especially in extreme weather conditions.
The rescued group consisted of three Mexican nationals, three Salvadorans, one Guatemalan, and one Chinese national. After their rescue, all eight individuals underwent medical assessments before being transported to the Uvalde Station for processing. This step is crucial to ensure their health and safety following such a perilous journey.
Authorities have reiterated the dangers posed by extreme heat, limited access to water, and the life-threatening conditions of confined spaces. In light of these risks, the U.S. Border Patrol encourages anyone in distress to call 911 immediately.
