Trump administration’s social media posts ahead of elections criticized for being inflammatory

In recent social media posts, the Trump administration has sparked controversy by sharing images that critics have deemed inflammatory. Among these is a pumpkin carved with a sombrero design, juxtaposed with a Halloween-themed backdrop featuring a Black man who has been accused of committing food assistance fraud. This comes just days before the midterm elections, aligning with the government’s intensified campaign against immigration and fraud, which has become a significant concern for voters facing rising healthcare costs and economic challenges.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins shared a striking image on the social platform X, showcasing a Black man in front of stacks of what seem to be U.S. currency. The post bore the headline “SNAP FRAUDSTER,” a clear reference to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), previously known as food stamps. The man is depicted holding a burning bill, accompanied by the caption, “Some costumes come with a price tag. This one comes with a prison sentence,” framed within the context of a fake Halloween costume advertisement.

Another post from the White House featured the aforementioned pumpkin alongside the phrase, “Spooky szn is here.” This imagery has drawn criticism for its perceived insensitivity, especially as it follows the arrest of Mercedes Reshard New, a social media influencer known as “Shawty Dred.” New was charged with fraud for allegedly obtaining over $4 million in SNAP benefits through fraudulent means.

The controversy surrounding these posts is not without precedent. Just over a year ago, during a government shutdown, the White House was accused of sharing a deepfake video to ridicule House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, featuring him in a sombrero. This has raised concerns about the administration’s approach to social media and its impact on public discourse.

The recent uptick in anti-immigrant rhetoric from the Trump administration has included accusations of fraud against notable figures, including U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar. Her home was searched by federal agents amid ongoing investigations into her family’s immigration paperwork, a move that has been characterized by some as politically motivated.

Federal prosecutors have detailed New’s alleged criminal activities, claiming that he controlled more than 350 fraudulent SNAP accounts under stolen identities from January 2020 to July 2026. He reportedly sought authorization for his company, Shawty Dred LLC, to operate as a SNAP retailer, using EBT debit cards to extract substantial funds from the accounts.

New’s social media presence, boasting over two million followers, has showcased his lavish lifestyle, including private jet travel and luxury vehicles. As outlined by the FBI, the funds he allegedly siphoned from SNAP were not used to support families in need but instead financed his opulent way of living. Special Agent in Charge of FBI Atlanta, Marlo Graham, emphasized the gravity of this situation, stating, “Instead of this money feeding families in need, New allegedly used the cash to bankroll a life of luxury.”

Indicted by a federal grand jury on multiple counts, including mail fraud and identity theft, New was arrested on October 13 and remains in custody. His prior arrests also include charges related to identity theft and fraud, highlighting a troubling history of criminal behavior.

As this situation unfolds, the responses from organizations such as the NAACP, the White House, and Rollins are yet to be seen. The handling of these posts and the broader implications of the administration’s messaging will likely continue to provoke critical discussions about race, fraud, and immigration policies in the United States.
