LOS ANGELES – Nick Reiner, the son of filmmaker Rob Reiner, is currently in a challenging situation. He has filed a petition in a Los Angeles County court seeking access to funds from a trust his parents established for him. This request comes amidst serious allegations; Nick is accused of murdering his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, who were tragically killed in their home in December.
According to the petition, which his civil attorneys submitted, Nick claims that the trustees managing the trust funds are unjustly denying him access to the money he needs for his defense. The 32-year-old argues that he is entitled to these resources, especially given the severity of the charges he faces.
“Nick loved his parents, and he is devastated by their deaths. But the facts about what did and did not happen to them are not at issue in this Trust litigation,” the petition states. It emphasizes that, like anyone accused of a crime, Nick is presumed innocent and deserves to defend himself with the resources that belong to him.
The Reiners were found dead in their upscale Brentwood, Los Angeles home on December 14, 2023. Nick was arrested shortly after and has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder. Initially, he hired prominent attorney Alan Jackson to represent him, but Jackson left the case less than a month later for undisclosed reasons. The filing reveals that Nick’s siblings, Jake and Romy, had initially agreed to cover Jackson’s fees but later changed their minds.
In a declaration included with the court documents, Jackson expressed his willingness to resume representing Nick if the necessary funds become available. The trust, set up in 1993, reportedly contains at least $1.5 million in assets, yet Nick has not received the portions he is entitled to upon turning 30 and 35, as specified in the trust’s guidelines.
The petition reveals that Nick was supposed to receive half of his trust funds when he turned 30, but he claims he never got this money. The current trustee, attorney Paul R. Kanin, has provided various reasons to deny Nick access to these funds, including unsubstantiated concerns about his competency.
Nick argues that he needs immediate access to these funds for his defense and basic needs while in custody. The state of his legal proceedings is currently slow, with a pretrial hearing scheduled for September. Nick faces serious charges, including the possibility of the death penalty, although the District Attorney has not yet decided whether to pursue this option.
The Reiner family’s tragedy is compounded by the mystery surrounding the motives and details of the case. As of now, many questions remain unanswered, with a court order preventing the release of autopsy details and other crucial information.
Rob Reiner is well-known for directing iconic films such as “This is Spinal Tap,” “Stand By Me,” and “When Harry Met Sally…” His wife, Michele Singer Reiner, was a respected photographer and producer. They were married for 36 years and had a profound impact on the film industry.
In April, Nick’s brother, Jake Reiner, shared his heartbreak regarding the situation, describing it as “a living nightmare” that is “too devastating to comprehend.” The family is enduring an unimaginable loss while navigating the complexities of the legal system and the allegations against Nick.
