LONDON – Penelope Keith, a beloved British actress known for her sharp wit and memorable roles, has passed away at the age of 86. She was best known for her performances in classic sitcoms such as “The Good Life” and “To the Manor Born.” Keith’s family announced on Monday that she died at her home in Surrey, after a battle with cancer.

Keith began her acting journey onstage, joining the esteemed Royal Shakespeare Company in 1963. However, it was television that brought her widespread acclaim and popularity. In 1977, she won a BAFTA award for her role as Margo Leadbetter in “The Good Life.” Margo was a snobbish suburbanite who found her life turned upside down by her unconventional neighbors, Tom and Barbara Good, played by Richard Briers and Felicity Kendal.

Kendal described her as a “comic genius,” saying, “She was a joy to know and work with, and she will be much missed.” This sentiment reflects the impact Keith had on her colleagues and audiences alike, showcasing her talent and charm.

In “To the Manor Born,” which aired from 1979 to 1981 and returned for a Christmas special in 2007, Keith portrayed Audrey fforbes-Hamilton, a cash-strapped aristocrat who was forced to sell her estate to a self-made millionaire, played by Peter Bowles. Their dynamic, filled with humorous tension, was a highlight of the series.

Beyond sitcoms, Keith lent her distinctive voice to children’s shows like “Teletubbies” and featured in various commercials for brands such as Pimm’s and Parker Pens. She also hosted documentary series like “Penelope Keith’s Hidden Villages,” where she explored the charm of rural England.

Even in her 80s, Keith continued to grace the stage with her performances, demonstrating her enduring passion for acting. In a fitting tribute, theaters across London’s West End will dim their lights on Wednesday evening in honor of her legacy.

In recognition of her contributions to the arts and charity, she was made a Dame in 2014, an honor that reflects her significant impact on British culture. Keith leaves behind her husband, Rodney Timson, and their two adopted sons, as well as a legacy that will be cherished by fans and fellow artists for years to come.
