Irish authorities reported that a man in his 50s died after a single-vehicle motorcycle crash in Lucan, on the outskirts of Dublin, shortly before 4:30 a.m. Despite immediate medical attention at the scene, he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Glen Hansard was not just a musician; he was also an actor who made a mark in both industries. He played a key role as a member of a Dublin soul band in the iconic 1991 film “The Commitments.” In 2008, he won an Oscar for the song “Falling Slowly” from the film “Once,” where he starred alongside Markéta Irglová.

As the long-time frontman of the rock band The Frames and one half of the duo The Swell Season, Hansard was instrumental in shaping the Irish music scene. His solo album “Didn’t He Ramble” received a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album in 2016.

Hansard was also known for his generous spirit, famously leading a charity busk outside Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre on Christmas Eve, where the public could enjoy performances by famous Irish musicians in support of the Dublin Simon Community.

Most recently, he moved many hearts at the funeral of The Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan in 2023, where he performed the beloved song “Fairytale Of New York” with singer Lisa O’Neill, bringing joy and dancing to the attendees.

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin expressed his sorrow over Hansard’s passing, stating he was “deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Glen Hansard.” He acknowledged Hansard’s significant contributions to Ireland’s cultural landscape over many years.
